The increasing global demand for IT services has created a worldwide shortage of skilled IT personnel. The greater the introduction of modern technologies the greater the need for the intellectual capital required to implement such technologies. Enterprises seeking staff members for high demand areas, such as client/server and Enterprise Resource Planning(ERP), will fail to find suitable qualified candidates within a year of starting their search. Furthermore the limiting factor to deploying IT solutions, and to IT organisational effectiveness will be people and their skills, not capital.
This is further compounded by the fact that much of the formal training, even in tertiary institutions, are not proving skills that are appropriate to the industry. Students who are graduating with Computer Science degrees have the basic knowledge of how a computer works but lack vital exposure to the wide variety of problems that can be experienced in networking. Much of the formal qualifications needed in the industry are brand name skills such as becoming MS Certified or being CISCO certified engineer. IS would employ an MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) before a graduate with only a B.Sc!
